Grim Pickings

Cinemas & Home Entertainment this week…

13 March 2018

GRIM PICKINGS this week includes key dates to dismember with cinema bringing us a new version of everyone’s favorite grave-robber, a low-key Aussie comedy, and probably the biggest slasher release of the year. Meanwhile, on home entertainment comes one of the best of the DC cinematic offerings and an under-the-radar sci-fi thriller.

IN CINEMAS

Thursday March 15th
TOMB RAIDER
The much-anticipated new Tomb Raider film starring ALICIA VIKANDER takes its plot from the 2013 game, which was praised for its bared-down and gritty reboot of the series. If the film has truly learnt from the games’ success, this should be one exciting and extremely violent cinema-going experience! Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination – a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn’t be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.

THAT’S NOT MY DOG
This Aussie comedy is full of local comedians and personalities playing themselves (including SHANE JACOBSON, JIMEOIN and FIONA O’LOUGHLIN) and perfectly captures our national sense of humor. Quite simply the perfect film for a relaxing ‘feel-good’ trip to the movies. The invite that goes out is clear. Don’t bring meat. We’ll provide the beer. Just come armed with nothing but the funniest jokes you’ve ever heard. Shane will take care of the rest. It’ll be a night of great friends telling the world’s funniest jokes. THAT’S NOT MY DOG! is a joyous comedy that celebrates our love of joke telling.

THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT
It’s taken a decade for a sequel to 2008’s legitimately chilling slasher-classic THE STRANGERS to hit cinema screens. But if this film offers half of the emotional trauma or stripped-bare brutality of its predecessor, it will be well worth the wait – and early hype has us confident this is the rare worthy-sequel to a horror classic! A family’s road trip takes a dangerous turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park to stay with some relatives and find it mysteriously deserted. Under the cover of darkness, three masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test the family’s every limit as they struggle to survive.

HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Tuesday March 13th
JUSTICE LEAGUE
The most impressive film to come out of the DC cinematic universe, JUSTICE LEAGUE arrives on home video, bringing all the usual Zack Snyder touches along with it. Odds are you  knew where you stood on this one long before it hit cinemas. Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash — it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

THE RECALL
This sci-fi horror places the iconic WESLEY SNIPE and RJ MITTE (Walt Jr. from BREAKING BAD) in a cabin in the woods and sets them to work hunting down aliens.  Alien invasion aside, this one is definitely worth a view for the one-in-a-lifetime pair-up alone! A man and a woman forge an alliance with a mysterious hunter when aliens abduct their friends at a remote lakefront cabin.
