Grim Pickings for Cinema & Home Entertainment this week…
GRIM PICKINGS this week includes key dates to dismember with the theatrical release of an award-winning, tension-soaked, atmospheric thriller and the home entertainment arrival of a sci-fi/horror that out aliens Ridley’s latest offering.
Thursday July 13th
Edgar Wright returns to the director’s chair after the creative differences that saw him depart ANT-MAN but leave his quintessential mark on the finished film and what a return it is with a full-throttle, high-stakes and toe-tapping extravaganza! A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
After receiving the coveted Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Sofia Coppola’s latest cinematic adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s beloved novel THE BEGUILED (aka A PAINTED DEVIL) opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events.
Wednesday July 12th
Lead by Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson & Ryan Reynolds, LIFE is a sci-fi/horror not too dissimilar to Ridley Scott’s 1979 ALIEN, penned by DEADPOOL’s Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and directed by Daniel Espinosa (SAFE HOUSE, CHILD 44). A team of scientists aboard the International Space Station’s mission of discovery turns to one of primal fear when they find a rapidly evolving life form that caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew and all life on Earth. Don’t forget to enter our competition for a chance to WIN 1 of 10 LIFE on Blu-ray!
After making its international festival rounds last year, the western/thriller BRIMSTONE featuring an all-star including Guy Pierce, Kit Harington & Dakota Fanning arrives on home entertainment this week. Liz (Dakota Fanning) is a mute young woman who lives together with her husband and two children. She is a midwife and communicates through sign language, sometimes assisted by her daughter. Her relationship with her 14 year old son could be better, but otherwise Liz’s life seems pretty good. When the new reverend (Guy Pearce) climbs the pulpit in church, Liz freezes. She immediately knows she and her family are in danger. In four chapters we see not only how the reverend tries to take everything Liz loves away from her, but also how her life has unfolded in the past.
