IN CINEMAS

Thursday January 18th
THE SHAPE OF WATER
Guillermo del Toro (PAN’S LABYRINTH) crafts an other-worldly fable that pits the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in an AMELIE world against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.

THE COMMUTER
Liam Neeson returns to the screen in another actioner though this time in the vein of NICK OF TIME, FLIGHTPLAN and UNDER SEIGE: DARK TERRITORY.  Michael (Neeson), is an insurance salesman on his daily commute home, which quickly becomes anything but routine. After being contacted by a mysterious stranger, Michael is forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on his train before the last stop. As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, he realizes a deadly plan is unfolding and is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy. One that carries life and death stakes for himself and his fellow passengers.

HAPPY DEATH DAY
Blumhouse Productions (GET OUT, THE PURGE, SPLIT) delivers the GROUNDHOG DAY of horror in a relatively bloodless but hugely satisfying modern slasher. Tree, a college student (Jessica Rothe, LA LA LAND) relives the day of her murder over and over with both unexceptional details and a terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity. Stay tuned this week for your chance to WIN 1 of 10 HAPPY DEATH DAY on Blu-ray!
MOTHER!
Seemingly the most polarising film of 2017 hits home entertainment this week and on all three formats to boot! Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, BLACK SWAN), MOTHER! certainly is an acquired taste, highly stylised and artistically-driven, it appeared on three of our Cultist’s top ten lists for 2017! A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice. Stay tuned this week for your chance to WIN 1 of 10 MOTHER! on Blu-ray!
BLADE RUNNER 2049
Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL, SICARIO) serves up the sequel to BLADE RUNNER that no one anticipated and defies expectation by delivering a film that is equal to its predecessor if not possibly better. Appearing on several of our cultists’ top ten lists for 2017, Jarret described this one as “a sensory overload that had…[him] sitting slack-jawed in a cinema for the entire 164 minutes of its runtime”. Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
BEYOND SKYLINE
Debuting this week on home entertainment is the sequel to 2010’s CGI spectacle SKYLINE, starring Frank Grillo (PURGE: ANARCHY, WHEELMAN) and Iko Uwais (THE RAID 1 & 2). Get ready for sci-fi thrills beyond imagination. When the population of Los Angeles is vacuumed off the face of the earth, a tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship. Crash landing the ship in Southeast Asia, he must forge an alliance with a band of survivors to discover the key to saving his son and taking back the planet once and for all.
STRATTON
Dominic Cooper (TV’s PREACHER) plays the titular role in this new DTV actioner based on the international best-selling series of books by Duncan Falconer (who himself is a former member of the elite Special Boat Services). When a complex joint British/US military operation goes horribly wrong in Iran, elite SBS member John Stratton (Cooper) is summoned by the top-brass at MI6. They have intel that a former soviet operative has gone rouge and plans to take revenge on his former paymasters by using stolen chemical weapons. Now Stratton and his team must draw on their extensive training to stop the unimaginable happening.
