07 February 2018

GRIM PICKINGS this week includes key dates to dismember with the return of Lin Shaye in the highly anticipated fourth entry of a popular supernatural franchise while home entertainment delivers a less than stellar eighth instalment in a ‘why are we still watching this’ franchise!

Thursday February 8th
Genre luminary Lin Shaye returns as the brilliant parapsychologist, Dr. Elise Rainier, in a script penned by franchise creator Leigh Whannell (SAW, THE MULE) and directed by Adam Robitel (THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN). Parapsychologist Elise Rainier and her team travel to Five Keys, N.M., to investigate a man’s claim of a haunting. Terror soon strikes when Rainier realizes that the house he lives in was her family’s old home.

Master filmmaker Clint Eastwood helms this true story of three men whose brave act turned them into heroes during a high-speed railway ride. In the early evening of August 21, 2015, the world watched in stunned silence as the media reported a thwarted terrorist attack on Thalys train #9364 bound for Paris—an attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. The film follows the course of the friends’ lives, from the struggles of childhood through finding their footing in life, to the series of unlikely events leading up to the attack. Throughout the harrowing ordeal, their friendship never wavers, making it their greatest weapon and allowing them to save the lives of the more than 500 passengers on board.

It’s been seven years between films and now Aussie genre luminaries, Michael & Peter Spierig, the writing/directing duo behind PREDESTINATION & DAYBREAKERS, have taken the reigns on this new chapter in the SAW franchise. After a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement find themselves chasing the ghost of a man dead for over a decade and embroiled in a new game that’s only just begun. Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a killer with designs of their own?
Based on a popular yet short-lived comic strip series in British comic book, TOXIC! from the early-nineties. Mike Fallon (Scott Adkins) is the Accident Man – a stone-cold killer and the best at what he does. But when a loved one is dragged into the London underworld and murdered by his own crew, Fallon is forced to rip apart the life he knew in order to avenge the one person who actually meant something to him.
Rescued from the depths of obscurity, the MAD MAX meets FAIR GAME Aussie genre flick RUN CHRISSIE RUN makes its DVD debut courtesy of Umbrella Entertainment in their Ozploitation Classics series. 15-year-old Chrissie (Annie Jones, Neighbours) and her mother, Eve (Carmen Duncan, Winners & Losers), must suddenly leave their peaceful, suburban existence and run for their lives. Having learnt the terrible secrets of her mother’s past and the shocking identity of her real father, Chrissie a much older and wiser young woman as old scores are settled in a final cataclysmic shoot-out.
Following their 2016 DVD release, Cinema Cult brings the 1961 Ray Harryhausen classic to Blu-ray for the first-time in Australia! The fantastic Captain Nemo (here played by Herbert Lom) once again inspires the spirit of adventure in another Jules Verne classic. Captain Cyrus Harding (Michael Craig) leads three Union soldiers in a daring escape from a Confederate prison camp in a seized Confederate balloon. A raging storm forces the balloon over the ocean toward a Pacific island on which the group becomes marooned. The shipwrecked women share in the dangerous encounters the castaways have with a host of gigantic beasts (courtesy of Ray Harryhausen’s special effects). Their fight for survival is aided by the mysterious Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, who, in an attempt to increase the world’s food supply, helped create the strange animals. When a volcano erupts and threatens to destroy everyone, can Nemo save them?
