Cinema Nova’s MEET THE FILMMAKER series hits a genre high note on June 12th when it welcomes one of Australias’s busiest exports, Leigh Whannell, to Carlton for a special preview screening of UPGRADE. Set in an alarming possible near-future, the SAW creator’s latest offering is a horror / sci-fi / action mashup that already has critics and audiences raving. Prior to its official June 14th release date, attendees are also invited to join Monster Pictures’ Neil Foley for a post-screening Q&A with the Melbourne-born writer/director, thanks to those purveyors of awesome, Madman Entertainment.
Technology controls nearly every aspect of our daily lives. When Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) – a self-identified technophobe – has his world turned upside down by a random accident, his only hope for returning to a ‘normal’ life is through a groundbreaking experiment involving a microchip being implanted into his body. Sworn to keep this new medical advancement a secret, Grey struggles to keep his pact when he discovers that the circumstances that changed his life may not have been random.
Shot in Melbourne but set in a near future America, UPGRADE remixes such cinema classics as Paul Verhoeven’s ROBOCOP and Steve Barron’s ELECTRIC DREAMS into a thrilling, pulpy delight.
